AN EXPLANATION OF FASTING
Doing without something, for a season, in the natural, to experience something greater in the supernatural.
There is power in slowing down, cutting out, changing pace to focus on God and His desires for your life, this city, and our world. As a community we take time to fast together because we believe there is power in numbers and significant value in seeking God together. On this page are resources we've gathered to help teach you more about fasting, its purpose, what it is and is not, and how to make the most of this spiritual discipline that God encourages in His Word. We hope you find them incredibly helpful!
Frequently Asked Questions about Fasting
Why should I fast?
Jesus sets the expectation that fasting is an integral part of life for His followers. In the Sermon on the Mount, He says not ‘if,’ but “…when you fast” (Matthew 6:16, emphasis added). But fasting isn’t simply a hunger strike. In the words of David Mathis, fasting is about channeling and expressing our desire for God. Going without food for a time, especially in our consumerist culture, resets and reminds us as Christians that it’s way better to be spiritually fed than for our bellies to be full and our hearts to be empty.

How/What/When should I fast?
The simple answer is— it’s complicated. Fasting is, ultimately, about focusing on the Lord. That being said, there are tons of things that could affect the way fasting looks from person to person. The intensity of a fast may range from skipping morning coffee to completely abstaining from solid foods. (A quick note, it is NEVER recommended to fast from water!)
Your plan for fasting should be done with prayerful consideration for what the Lord desires from you. If you have health concerns, for example, fasting from food may not be an option. In that case, you may choose to fast from something like entertainment, social media, or ‘fun foods’ like caffeine and sugar instead.
How should I talk to my kids about fasting?
While children should not be made to go without meals, there are still plenty of awesome ways to include them in a time of fasting. Depending on your child’s age and maturity level, this can range from a devotional, a conversation about why you yourself are fasting, to encouraging them to abstain from tv shows or video games.
